Muntu’s New Party Named ‘Alliance for National Transformation’

Former FDC president Mugisha Muntu says his new party the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), previously referred to as the New Formation, will be launched “soon”.

A statement by the party’s convener, former MP Alice Alaso Asinaut, indicates that the Electoral Commission (EC) had cleared the ANT as a political party.

“The next phase is the gazetting of the same, which we expect will be done in the next few weeks,” Alaso said in the statement issued on March 19.

“We are now in position to make arrangements for the official launch. The date, venue and time for the official launch will be communicated soon.”

Muntu had earlier expected to have his party launched by the 2018 Christmas but EC processes seemed longer than had been anticipated.

What this announcement now makes clear is the name of the party.

Muntu’s left the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in September 2018.

A founder member of the FDC, Muntu quit after months of consultations following a defeat to former MP Patrick Oboi Amuriat in the 2017 party presidential election.

Muntu’s exit from the FDC and the emergence of MP Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, a new kid on the political scene are likely to further divide an already divided opposition ahead of the 2021 general elections.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has already endorsed longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni as a sole candidate.
