Police are investigating allegations of death threats and mafia in government as made by junior minister for investment and privatization Evelyn Anite.

Last week, Anite told reporters she had received death threats from the mafia in government over her efforts to save Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL).

“The plan by the mafia is to take Anite out of the picture… You know the mafia; they are the ones who have been blocking the audit of UTL. These mafia are not jokers. Go and ask Abiriga,” Anite told the press in Kampala.

“I might die but history will judge them… I will die with my mouth open; I will die while shouting the mafia are coming until they take me down.”

She has clashed with deputy attorney general Mwesigwa Rukutana, UTL administrator Bemanya Twebaze and secretary to treasury and finance minister permanent secretary Keith Muhakanizi.

Anite has since sought divine intervention to have her life saved. Religious leaders laid their hands on her, asking God to send His angels to preserve the minister.

A week after Anite made the allegations, police has revealed investigations into the matter are ongoing.

On Monday, police spokesperson Fred Enanga  told reporters police had quizzed Anite on her claims.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is handling the investigation and its officers have now embarked on “actively pursuing a number of lines of inquiry, to help prove or disprove her claim”.

Enanga said no suspects had been arrested “but we have increased vigilance on her security, both close body and at her residence”.

The investigators are expected to summon Twebaze, Rukutana and Muhakanizi for questioning.

Police are yet to give Anite, also Koboko Municipality MP, more guards.

“Any additional protection and related security adjustments will be provided if the situation warrants,” said Enanga.

“We would like to inform all her family members, her constituency members and the wider public that she is well protected.”
