Police has come out to clear the air on reports that have been making rounds about the death of Rita Nabukenya, a leader in the Bobi Wine led People Power movement.
Nabukenya was killed in a motor accident on Monday morning around Nakawa market.
“Police officers in a patrol vehicle saw comrade Rita Nabukenya donning our attire, drove after her and knocked her dead in broad daylight. We must end this regime of blood,” Mr. Wine said in a tweet posted on Monday afternoon.
Police responds.
In a statement released on Monday evening, Kampala Metropolitan Police publicist Luke Owoyesigire said that the deceased succumbed to injuries sustained after a boda boda she was riding on collided with another boda boda.
“In the accident, a motorcycle UEY 675P was trying to overtake our patrol vehicle number UP 4841 but unfortunately collided with another motorcycle whose registration was not captured immediately because he fled the scene,” the statement reads in part.
Owoyesigire further explains that Nabukenya, a resident of Bunamwaya sustained injuries after she fell off the speeding motorcycle. She was rushed to Mulago hospital from where she died.
“Traffic at Jinja Road Police has now opened up inquiries into the matter with the aim of ascertaining what exactly happened. Police is also still looking for the other rider who is still on the run,” the statement further reads.
“We have recorded statements from eyewitnesses and the crew of the 999 patrol vehicle. We shall retrieve the CCTV footage to confirm what exactly happened.”
