Covid-19: Government Food Relief Program to Commence on Saturday

Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has announced that the government will on Saturday start distributing food to different homes around Kampala and Wakiso. Rugunda made the revelation while appearing before parliament on Wednesday.

The distribution, Rugunda said would be done at L.C.1 level with the aid of security officers in order to ensure social distancing in the process of distribution.

The Prime Minister also added that each person would be offered with 3 kilograms of Beans and 6 Kilograms of posho per head.

The Prime minister’s announcement comes two days after the president pledged to cater for the hand to mouth citizens through a food relief program. “The Government anti-coronavirus actions of stopping public transport and other measures have put the drivers and other people out of work. Besides, many of them live hand to mouth ─ the daily bread. Without those activities, especially in the towns, such people may not be able to buy food. The Government, after properly identifying these people will distribute food to them in the form of akahuunga (maize flour), beans, powder milk, sugar, salt, etc,” Museveni announced on Monday.

The President also warned individuals especially politicians who had started distributing food to people in the name of relief saying that they would be arrested for attempted murder. “In disstributing food, people gather, which fuels the spread of the virus.”

The President said the politicians were seeking cheap popularity.
