The 2020 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (Chogm) in Kigali, Rwanda, has been postponed.
The summit was scheduled to happen in June, 22-27.
A statement by the Commonwealth Secretariat reads; “As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to postpone the 26th Chogm scheduled to take place in Kigali.”
According to Rwandan President Paul Kagame, postponing was inevitable.
“In the coming months, every Commonwealth nation will be fully focused on combatting Covid-19 and its socio-economic impact on our people,”
The summit will still be held in Kigali but the new schedule has not been announced yet.
Kagame said that his country cannot wait to welcome the commonwealth family when all this is over.
Rwanda currently has 66 active cases of coronavirus, 84 recoveries and zero deaths.
A number of global events have been called off or pushed to later dates due to Covid-19.
