Gen Tumukunde Fails to Get “Substantial” Sureties

Rtd. Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde has written to court imploring it to review the requirements court set for him to get bail.

Tumukunde was denied bail on April 14 by the head of the Criminal Division of the High Court Wilson Kwesiga on grounds that the sureties he had presented were not of greater influence as compared to him.

Tumukunde was asked to present sureties who are of a higher rank than himself.

The former security Minister has, however, said he had failed to find anyone above him to stand surety for him.

“Since the ruling (on bail), I have personally endeavoured to implement the requirement of securing the presence of two military serving officers of the same rank (Lt.General) r a higher rank with a letter of introduction from the Chief of Defense Force which requirement I have practically impossible thereby hindering my constitutional right to bail,”

There are only 23 senior army officers on the same rank or higher rank than Tumukunde. These are; President Museveni, Gen. David Muhoozi, Salim Saleh, Ivan Koreta, Elly Tumwine, Katumba Wamala, Joram Mugume, Kale Kayihura, David Sejusa and Moses Ali.

Those at his rank are; Mbadi Wilson (Deputy CDF), James Mugira, Peter Elwelu, Pecos Kutesa, Nakibus Lakara, Charles Lutaaya, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Andrew Gutti, Jim Oweyesigyire, John Mugume, Charles Otema Awany, and Joseph Musanyufu and many more.
