Bernhard Glaser, a German national who has been battling charges of sexual abuse for several years has passed away. His death was announced on Thursday by the Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine.
His lawyer Evans Ochieng confirmed the death and said he had died in prison. Glaser appeared before court on Wednesday and was granted a bail of 30m by the High Court in Kampala to travel to Belgium for treatment. He was wheeled in court on a stretcher.
Although his lawyers said the conditions of bail were fair, Glaser failed to raise the money and was sent back to prison.
Glaser first arrested in November 2013 and charged after two children under his care accused him of sexual abuse. The minors aged between 12 and 14, said that Glaser had repeatedly defiled them since 2007.
He was released after two months but his woes continued and in 2019 he was re-arrested and charged with 28 counts including aggravated defilement and child trafficking among others.
