High Court Set to Rule On 10Billion COVID-19 Money

The High court of Uganda is set to rule on the controversial 10 billion shillings that was given to Members of parliament to fight Covid-19 in March.

Justice Elebu set June, 16 for the ruling of the case.

“An illegality must remain on record for the parliament of the Republic of Uganda and must be cautioned as such the only authority that has the power to pose such an illegal act,” Lawyer David K. Mpanga said on Thursday, June 4 while after appearing before the court.

The legislators who filed the suit against parliament also claim that the budget committee chairperson, Amos Lugolobi, Ntenjeru North MP sneaked the 10 billion budget in parliament.

“We are challenging the procedure of how that 10 billion was cut off from the budget of the ministry of health. Now, in terms of our interest in court, we don’t want the next cycle of the budget for the same thing to happen. So the court should be clear, that the process of taking the 10 billion was not clear. If the court doesn’t do that, the next cycle of budgeting the committee chairperson will raise up and maybe this time propose 100 billion,” Jonathan Odur, MP Erute South said.

Courts ruling, however, comes when a number of legislators have already returned the 20 million shillings given to them to fight Covid-19.
