The Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine has announced on Wednesday that a prisoner who was in isolation at Kawuti  Prison has tested positive for coronavirus.

“I am here to inform the nation that Monday, the suspect was in isolation at our centre in Kawuti prison, Namutumba, eastern Uganda. By the close of business on Monday, results came and he was found positive,” Baine told the media.

“Fortunately, he was in isolation and at the same time his people had secured his release from prison but because of what is going on, we were not able to hand him over to his relatives but to the ministry of health and is being treated in Jinja.

When the outbreak of coronavirus was announced in Uganda, the Uganda Prisons said there were plans to decongest the prisons across the country to avoid the spread. People with petty crimes and the elderly would be pardoned by the President.
