The messaging app Telegram has launched video calls, adding to its text messaging. The alpha version of the release is available for both Android and iOS users, after several months of testing.
Like other video content on Telegram, video calls support picture-in-picture mode, so users can follow other chats and multitask while calling.
In addition, all video calls are protected with end-to-end encryption, the same as texts. To confirm the connection, the four emoji shown on-screen for the caller and recipient must be the same.
To start, video calls are available only one-to-one. Telegram said future updates will include group video calls.
The new release comes as Telegram marks its seventh anniversary. The app has attracted over 400 million users in that time.
