Speaker Rebecca Kadaga is among politicians in the National Resistance Movement who maintained their seats on the party’s Central Executive Committee.
Kadaga had her position as NRM second national chairperson threatened by State minister for Lands Persis Namuganza.
In elections held on Thursday, Kadaga beat Namuganza, gathering 6,776 votes against Namuganza’s 3943 votes.
The two leaders had been in a verbal fight until the last minute of the elections. Namuganza’s point of argument was that Kadaga is too old to serve. She argued that it is time for the youth to lead NRM.
In rebuttal, Kadaga said she was younger than Museveni, and if the party is supporting Museveni for another term, why then should someone says she is old.
In the same elections, Mike Mukula also retained his seat as NRM Vice chairperson Eastern Uganda. He beat Tororo Municipality MP Sanjay Tana.
Mukula garnered 5818 against Tanna’s 4162.
In the Central region, State Minister for Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda beat Kayunga district NRM chairman, Moses Karangwa to the seat on the top party organ whereas in Western Uganda, State Minister for Housing, Chris Baryomunsi trounced NRM bush war hero and Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Maj.Gen.Matayo Kyaligonza who was the incumbent.
In Northern Uganda, deputy speaker, Jacob Oulanyah beat former minister, Sam Engola to a position on the NRM top organ.
