Security forces have surrounded the homes of former Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and that of opposition strongman Dr. Kizza Besigye a day to the swearing in of President Yoweri Museveni.
This has been confirmed by both the two opposition figures who have claimed that heavily armed security officers have mounted roadblocks at their homes.
“The military and police have yet again surrounded my residence, as Gen. Museveni prepares to illegally swear himself in this Wednesday! The coward is fully aware that he’s illegitimate, and that’s why he’s very scared of the people. Hang in there comrades. We shall overcome,” Bobi Wine posted on his social media.
Bobi Wine who came second in the January presidential elections was among the individuals invited the swearing-in ceremony but according to National Unity Platform-NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, no one from the party would attend.
UPDF Deputy Spokesperson Col Deo Akiiki has confirmed security presence at Kyagulanyi’s home which he said is for his [Bobi Wine] own good.
“The deployment at Bobi Wine’s residence is for his own good. We accord security based on the weight of a person. He is a distinguished Ugandan. His security can’t be as anybody else’s, But he was also invited. I saw the invitation,” Col Akiiki said.
Col. Akiiki however didn’t make comment on why Col. Besigye’s home had been surrounded.
Besigye, although he didn’t participate in the recently concluded elections is popular for leading protests in times as these as witnessed from the previous elections.
Museveni is slated to take oath of office on Wednesday May 12th, an event expected to be attended by over 4,000 people.
