A body of a 13-year-old girl has been retrieved from the lake in Namayingo district where she was attacked and killed by a crocodile on Friday.
It is reported that the child, Juliet Nakyaki from Bumera C village in Mutumba sub county had gone to fetch water from Lake Victoria on Friday evening when a crocodile attacked her. Fishermen mounted a search for the deceased’s remains since Friday night but only managed to recover part of them from a swamp on the lakeshore on Sunday morning.
The deceased’s body has been taken to Buyinja health centre IV mortuary awaiting postmortem. Bibali Musenengo, the deceased’s uncle says that Lake Victoria is the main source of water for the surrounding communities despite the frequent crocodile attacks.
“Despite the injuries that some of our people have sustained following endless attacks from crocodiles, we cannot sustain our livelihoods without Lake Victoria, which is the main water source,” he says.
Busoga East Police Spokesperson James Mubi says that a team of marine police unit personnel has been dispatched to the scene to investigate the matter and determine the danger that crocodiles pose to communities across the Bumera C shoreline. Mubi adds that the police personnel will also team up with community members, to earmark high crocodile attack risk areas, which he says will safeguard the public from such accidents.
