Police in Kampala are holding one of their own accused of killing his fiancée following a misunderstanding. The suspect is Corporal Sam Owuku, the driver of the Kampala South Regional Police Commander-RPC, Rogers Sseguya.
It is alleged that Owuku stormed the residence of his fiancée only identified as Nabukenya in Buddo with a gun at around 10pm on Monday night and shot her dead. Mark Busuulwa, who was passing by also sustained injuries on the right arm.
He reported the incident to the nearby police in Kyengera before being rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital where he is receiving treatment. Nabukenya was a teacher at Buddo preparatory school and had spent five years in a relationship with Corporal Owuku.
They recently developed a misunderstanding which cost her, her life. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson says that Owuku was preparing to flee when he was arrested. He says that the suspect had also abandoned the vehicle and the gun he used to kill Nabukenya.
He says that police recovered 13 rounds of ammunition at the crime scene, which will help them in their investigations.
Primah Kwagala, a lawyer and woman rights activist wants the government to place much emphasis on the mental health of civil servants like the police who work in very bad situations. She says that officers work under horrible conditions and need counselling to deal with the challenges.
