President Salva Kiir Mayardit has in a republican decree read on the state broadcaster Monday night removed the Governor of the Central Bank of South Sudan Dier Tong Ngor without giving reasons.
The decree read in part, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under article 182/7 of the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan, 2011 (as amended), read together with section 38/1 of the Interpretation of laws and general provision Act 2006, I, Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, do hereby issue this republican decree for the relief of Hon. Dier Tong Ngor as the Governor of Bank of South Sudan with effect from 3 January 2022.”
In another decree, President Kiir appointed Moses Makur Deng as the new governor of the Bank of South Sudan.
Makur, until his elevation to the governorship, worked as the director-general for bank supervision, research, and statistics at the central bank.
The relieved Tong served for two years and during his tenure tried to curb the runaway inflation by injecting hard currency into the market among other fiscal measures.
In separate decrees, President Kiir also appointed Peter Puok as deputy interior minister and relieved the first undersecretary of the ministry of finance and planning, Ochum Genes, who was appointed undersecretary in the ministry of trade and industry.
Another decree appointed Simon Ladu as the first undersecretary in the finance ministry.
