South Sudan Police Arrest Ugandan Medic After Death of His Patient

The police in Unity State’s Rubkona County over the weekend arrested a Ugandan doctor after one of his patients, a Sudanese trader identified as Mohammed Wanga, died of complications related to an injection on his backside.

The Rubkona County deputy director of police, Brigadier Franco Mayiel, said on Monday that the medic was arrested on Saturday afternoon at his clinic after Wanga died.

He said many of the detained doctor’s patients have suffered from wounds as a result of intramuscular injections.

“The authorities in Rubkona County have taken action against the doctor who committed crimes against the communities. Last Wednesday, the deceased (Wanga) went to the clinic and tested positive for malaria. The doctor recommended injections but by the second day, the patient was not getting better,” Brig.  Mayiel explained.

“The patient eventually died as a result of an abscess on the buttocks due to Penicillin G benzathine intramuscular injections at the Médecins Sans Frontières,(MSF) Hospital at the Bentiu IDP Camp.”

“When investigations are completed, the doctor will be sent to Bentiu Main Prison,” he added.

Meanwhile, Majhoub Ahmed, the chairperson of the Sudanese traders in Unity State, commended the county authorities for acting fast and detaining the doctor.

“I urge the Unity State government to check the documents of all doctors who are operating in the state,” he said.
