South Sudan: Rumbek University Lecturers Hold Protests Over Salary Arrears

Lecturers at the Rumbek University of Science and Technology on Tuesday held protest at the university campus over the delay by the government to pay their outstanding salaries and benefits.

The lecturers are demanding the release of arrears since November 2023 to June 2024.

They said they have laid down their tools, adding that they will only call off the strike if their arrears are paid, according to statement issued by the academic staff association during the general assembly held on June 28, 2024.

“The failure by the government to pay the above demanded arrears, the academic staff of Rumbek University of Science and Technology will not conduct lectures in the academic year 2024/2025,” it said.

They also want the government to pay them ticket allowances stemming from 2019 to 2024.

In addition, the lecturers also demand that their salaries be increased, according to the exchange rate of the Bank of South Sudan.
