UPDF Detain Two Opposition MPs And Journalists In Kawempe North By-Election

Violence and arrests marred the Kawempe North by-election as security forces detained two opposition MPs, journalists, and other individuals.

MPs Geofrey Kayemba Ssolo and Hillary Kiyaga, both from the National Unity Platform (NUP), were arrested at Kazo Angola polling station. Journalists covering the arrests were beaten, their equipment damaged or confiscated, and several, including Abubaker Lubowa, Raymond Tamale, Denis Kabugo, Francis Isano, and Hakim Wampamba, were detained in a “drone” vehicle.

Witnesses report being threatened at gunpoint. Journalists, including Hasifah Nanvuma, fled polling stations due to targeted attacks by military personnel.

The heavy military deployment, including mambas and drones, focused on Kazo Angola. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) condemned the escalating violence against journalists, citing multiple incidents since the by-election’s nomination period began on February 26.

Election day itself was marked by delays due to malfunctioning voter verification machines and late voter arrivals.
