The Electoral Commission has issued a strong caution to Ugandans against accessing an unauthorized website that claims to allow users to verify voter registration details and locate polling stations. The site, reportedly run by a group known as FANON, lacks any official approval and could expose users to potential risks.
In an official statement, the Commission clarified that the website has no connection whatsoever to the Electoral Commission. It emphasized that FANON has neither sought nor received accreditation as a voter education civil society organization, and therefore holds no authority to manage or provide voter information services.
Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, advised the public to steer clear of the platform entirely.
“The Electoral Commission unequivocally informs the public that the website www.registry.ugtally.com is unauthorized and has no affiliation with us,” Byabakama stated.
He further noted that the Commission bears no responsibility for any personal data entered into or retrieved from the site. The Commission highlighted that, under Articles 60 and 61 of the 1995 Constitution, it alone is constitutionally mandated to compile, maintain, update, and revise the National Voters Register.
Any unauthorized collection, hosting, or dissemination of voter data constitutes an offense and is subject to legal penalties.
Byabakama encouraged citizens to rely exclusively on the official Electoral Commission website for checking voter information and polling station assignments. He explained that the alert is intended to avoid public confusion, protect personal information from misuse, and safeguard voters from other potential dangers.
Additionally, the Commission has formally approached the Uganda Communications Commission for advice on appropriate measures to address the unauthorized platform.
