The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has transferred 44 restored boreholes to local communities in Amuru and Nwoya districts, calling on residents to maintain and use the water sources responsibly.
These boreholes are part of Quick Impact Projects implemented to mark the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary.
Separate handover events took place in the two districts, presided over by Col Nathan Bainomugisha, Commander of the 501 Infantry Brigade, who stood in for the 4 Infantry Division Commander, Maj Gen Felix Busizoori.Col Bainomugisha cautioned against improper use of the facilities and emphasized collective ownership.
“These boreholes are community property. They need to be safeguarded and utilized wisely so that everyone can benefit both today and for generations to come,” he remarked.
He also urged locals to participate in government initiatives like the Parish Development Model, the Four-Acre Model, women’s empowerment schemes, and youth livelihood programs, noting that these are designed to boost household earnings and drive community development.
Amuru Resident District Commissioner Geoffrey Oceng Osborn commended the UPDF for contributing to development in addition to its security role.
“The UPDF has extended its mandate beyond border protection to directly enhancing people’s lives. Its efforts in farming, infrastructure, and water supply represent a significant achievement worthy of nationwide acknowledgment,” he said.
Amuru District LC V Chairperson Michael Lakony recalled the district’s difficult history during the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, highlighting how the return of peace has created opportunities for progress and healing.He advised residents to steer clear of divisive content.
“We should be mindful of the messages we circulate, particularly on media platforms, as some can reopen old wounds for our communities,” Lakony stated.
In Amuru, Lamogi Sub-county’s Akwa Village LC III Chairperson Atkinson Ojara expressed gratitude to the UPDF for improving sanitation access. In Nwoya, Obul Village LC I Chairperson Walter Odoch in Lii Sub-county praised the government’s success in restoring peace across northern Uganda and strengthening overall national security.
The handover ceremonies were attended by UPDF personnel, local government officials, and community members.
