Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has assumed direct oversight of several major road construction and rehabilitation contracts across the country.
The development was confirmed on Thursday, April 9, 2026, following a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Works and Transport.
According to sources, Gen. Muhoozi has taken personal charge of key projects, including critical roads in the Karamoja region and other strategic routes previously handled by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and private contractors.
The move is understood to be part of a broader government effort to accelerate infrastructure development and ensure timely completion of projects that have faced delays due to funding constraints, contractor performance issues, and logistical challenges.
Gen. Muhoozi is expected to coordinate directly with the Ministry of Works and Transport, and the involved contractors to fast-track construction, improve quality control, and address bottlenecks.
This is the latest high-profile intervention by the Chief of Defence Forces in national development projects, following his earlier involvement in agricultural and food security initiatives.
The assumption of road contracts by Gen. Muhoozi has sparked mixed reactions, with some observers welcoming the move as a way to inject urgency and discipline into stalled projects, while others have raised questions about the military’s expanding role in civilian infrastructure development.
No official statement has yet been issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport regarding the exact scope of the contracts now under Gen. Muhoozi’s oversight.
