Thomas Tayebwa Retains Position as Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament

Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North County, has been re-elected as Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda.

Tayebwa secured a landslide victory with 457 votes, comfortably defeating the opposition-backed candidate Asinansi Nyakato, who received 45 votes.

Sarah Aguti came in third with 14 votes.

The election took place today at the Kololo Independence Grounds, following the earlier election of Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth-Oboth as Speaker.

Tayebwa will now serve as Deputy Speaker under Oboth-Oboth.

On Sunday, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the party caucus, meeting in Entebbe, overwhelmingly endorsed Tayebwa to retain the position.

Party leaders cited several factors for the endorsement, including respect for precedent — noting that previous Deputy Speakers have often served two consecutive terms — as well as Tayebwa’s mobilisation skills, vast experience, and youthful leadership.

Tayebwa previously served as Deputy Speaker in the 11th Parliament under former Speaker Anita Annet Among.

The opposition had fronted Asinansi Nyakato as its preferred candidate for the Deputy Speaker position.

However, with the NRM commanding a solid majority in the 527-member House, Tayebwa’s victory was widely expected.

In his remarks after the election, Tayebwa thanked Members of Parliament for the trust and confidence placed in him.

He pledged to work closely with the new Speaker to ensure the 12th Parliament remains productive, orderly, and focused on delivering results for all Ugandans.

The re-election of Tayebwa ensures continuity in the leadership of the House as the new Parliament begins its five-year term (2026–2031).
