Police on Sunday fired bullets to disperse two rival factions that had gathered at Makerere University’s Mitchell Hall to discuss “The youth and Constitutional Affairs”.
As expected, the discussion drifted to the issue of the age limit, and the two camps disagreed.
Police would then fire in the air, as the two groups almost went physical.
But the spark was lit when some rowdy students stormed the discussion venue and demanded that the debate be stopped immediately, arguing that age limit removal was not necessary.
The anti-age limit removal camp argued that there was no need to even debate the deletion of article 102b of the constitution that would allow three-decade president seek reelection past the age of 75.
After shooting in the air, police then safely evacuated ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) from Mitchel Hall.
Last Friday, cabinet okayed a proposal by some NRM MPs who on Tuesday resolved to table a private member’s Bill to delete Article 102 (b) from the Constitution.
