Police has Wednesday raided offices of two NGOs: Action Aid in Kansanga and Great Lakes Institute For Strategic Studies in Ntinda, ahead ahead of Thursday’s tabling of age limit removal bill in parliament.
Police besieged the offices and blocked the staff from leaving the premises.
According to an affidavit sworn before by Makindye Chief Magistrate’s court by AIP Henry Peter Walya attached to the Criminal Investigations Department, Action Aid in particular is being probed for being used to illegally transfer funds for illicit activities.
But Action Aid and Great Lakes Institute For Strategic Studies have been vocal in opposing the age limit removal bill.
The bill to be tabled by Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi seeks to delete article 102b that provides for the upper age limit of 75 above which one is not allowed to stand for president.
If the article is not deleted, Uganda’s three-decade president Yoweri Museveni will be ineligible for reelection when the east African land locked third world country next goes to the polls in 2021.
