Former Mulago National Referral Hospital Executive Director Dr Lawrence Kaggwa Nakaana is dead, The Tower Post has learnt.
Dr Kaggwa passed away on Friday morning at the Uganda Heart Institute, where he was admitted last month with breathing complications.
Born in April 1948 in Kiryasaka village, Masaka District, Dr Kaggwa attended Buyoga Primary School, Bukalasa Seminary, St Henry’s Kitovu, and St Mary’s College Kisubi schools before joining Makerere University Medical School in 1969 and completing in 1974.
He worked as the executive director of Mulago Hospital; Uganda’s National Referral Hospital for 12 years for 12 years from 1993.
During his time as Mulago Hospital ED, Dr Kaggwa played a fundamental in acquiring laboratory equipment for haematology (blood), bio-chemistry (chemicals in blood), hespatology (tissue) and micro biology (microorganisms, bacteria, viruses etc.) tests, after securing funding from the Japanese ambassador.
Ha also worked on the refurbishment the hospital structures including roofing, sewerage system, replacing electrical wires in the whole complex, creating a covered walkway connecting the old and new Mulago, leading to the rebranding of upper and lower Mulago instead of new and old Mulago.
Dr. Kaggwa also also sent hospital staff to Nairobi, India and America for training in the use of the intensive care unit and laboratory machines, open heart surgery and cancer treatment respectively.
He later Mulago to work as the Director Planning in the Ministry of Health in Uganda.
By the time of his death, he was a retired senior Consultant Surgeon, a specialty he practiced and taught for a long time. He also worked with AMREF (African Medical Research Foundation) as a consultant.
