President Yoweri Museveni has called on business people in Uganda to learn modern entrepreneurial techniques to be able to increase the supply of raw materials saying that this will go a long way in boosting business operations in the country.

Learning new skills can help businesses develop strategies that will assist with the growth of their business in a positive and potentially lucrative way. The President was speaking at a dinner that he hosted last evening for the business community at State House, Entebbe. The dinner was attended by a cross section of entrepreneurs including insurers, lawyers, traders, real estate developers and foreign investors, among others.

He said that the NRM Government has deliberately expended efforts to lower costs of doing business in the country such as extensive road construction to lower transport costs, constructed power dams to increase electricity supply as well as working on the availability of markets in East Africa and the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) regions, among others.

“Government has worked on roads and slowly we shall shift from roads to railways and water to reduce on costs of cargo,” he noted.

Mr. Museveni called on the business community to join hands with the NRM Government in fighting corruption, which he said, is a tax on business. He vowed to deal with corruption as well as those elements that are in the habit of delaying government projects.

“You have preserved corrupt people because you don’t report them. I put up a hot line that you can use. You should not tolerate corruption. We are going to deal with corruption and those who delay government projects,” he reiterated.

He asked the country’s entrepreneurs to be very active in import substitution and export promotion noting that this will in turn create jobs for the people.

State minister for Trade, Hon. Michael Kafabusa Werikhe, thanked President Museveni for inviting the business community saying it is a sign that government highly appreciates and recognizes the contribution of the business community to the development of the country.

The Chairman of NRM Entrepreneurs League, Mr. Robert Rukaari Mwesigwa, said that the business community dinner, that is going to be an annual event, will further bring together the business community and government. He saluted the NRM Government for leveling ground for business to flourish.

Hajat Faridah Nagawa, who is the Chairperson of the business community, commended President Museveni and the NRM Government for the conducive business environment in the country.
