Power distributor Umeme has said that their twitter account (www.twitter.com/umeme) has not been deactivated, The Tower Post reports.
This was said by the Utility’s Media Relations Manager Stephen Ilongole in an exclusive email to this website on Tuesday afternoon.
He was reacting to complaints raised on social media by several users and publications by different media outlets.
Earlier today, this website contacted Ilongole who over a phone call told us that the account was undergoing routine updates which caused a down time.
He would later send an email saying the account has not been deactivated.
“It was never deactivated as your story purports to portray,” Ilongole wrote in response to a previous publication by this website.
“Our @umemeltd Twitter handle is temporarily unavailable due to the ongoing procedural verification exercise by Twitter Inc. It will be restored soon after the exercise is done,” he added.

What we know
For the past close to 24 hours, the Umeme Twitter account has been down with no activity and no formal communication from the Utility over the issue.
Whether it was deactivated or not, remains an issue of contention.
About Verification as claimed by the publicist, this website understands that the Umeme Twitter account was already verified by the time it went off.
It is also public knowledge that Twitter suspended its verification program in November 2017 after it received criticism for verifying White supremacist Jason Kessler.
Since then, only Presidents have been granted verification.
