The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has invited the finance minister Matia Kasaija to appear on the floor of parliament and explain why a new deputy governor has not been appointed yet.
The position fell vacant after Louis Kasekende’s contract as deputy governor expired in January.
Kadaga’s directive came after Igara County Member of Parliament Micheal Kiwanda raised the issue as a matter of national importance.
“The office of Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda has been quite vacant for quite some time and he is the vice-chairperson of the board. This is a strategic institution and I fear we may face some challenges if the position isn’t filled in the shortest time. As you know, I have been processing a bill and I asked for some information but nobody was committed to answering questions,”
Mawanda is currently working on the Bank of Uganda Amendment Bill 2019.
Kadaga asked the minister to appear next week and give a statement.
