A Ugandan legislator has written to the Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Rebecca Kadaga to deduct Shs. 2,000,000 from his salary as a contribution to the country’s fight against the COVID19 global pandemic.
Ssemakula Lutamaguzi, the Nakasongola South Constituency Member of Parliament who also doubles as the shadow minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development instructed the speaker to start the deduction starting with the month of April.
“I write to authorize your office to make a deduction of Shs 2,000,000 from my monthly salary to support victims of the above mentioned pandemic (COVID19) and to support the Ministry of Health to greatly curtail the spread of this virus,” he wrote.
“The deductions should be made starting with the month of April 2020 until the deadline given by government.”
Lutamaguzi becomes the first legislator to sacrifice part of his monthly salary towards the fight against the Corona Virus.
He urged his fellow legislators to do the same and support the government’s effort to eradicate the virus.
“I would like to request you to make an appeal to leaders and my Hon. Colleagues to support this national cause in the same way that I have,” he further wrote.
As of today (March 24th), the Ministry of Health had recorded a total of 9 cases of Corona virus in the country.
