Following the acts of stigmatization and racism in China where several Africans were being evicted in their houses by Chinese, the Chinese ambassador to Uganda His Excellency Zheng Zhuqiang has reassured Ugandans about their safety in China citing that China’s government can not torture foreigners in their country.
In a meeting that happened on Saturday Uganda government sought intervention from China regarding the alleged mistreatment of Ugandans who together with other Africans say they have become targets of suspicion and subjected to forced evictions, arbitrary quarantines and mass coronavirus testing as the country steps up its fight against imported infections.
Several Africans posted on their social media handles that they had been forcibly evicted from their homes and turned away by hotels in China.
“I’ve been sleeping under the bridge for four days with no food to eat… I cannot buy food anywhere, no shops or restaurants will serve me, we are like beggars on the streets,” said Tony Mathias, an exchange student from Uganda who was forced from his apartment on Monday.
The Guangdong provincial government responded to concerns of discrimination by calling China and Africa good friends, partners and brothers.
It said it attached “great importance to some African countries’ concerns and is working promptly to improve” its way of operating.
