The Uganda Episcopal Conference has been postponed this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations due to Covid19.
This announcement was relayed by the chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference Rt Rev. Joseph Anthony Zziwa in a letter.
Rev Anthony relayed in the letter that the restrictions currently in place such as social distancing and the ban on public gathering do not allow the organization of the event.
“In the view of the above difficulties and uncertainty, I trust you understand the situation and accept to postpone the Uganda Martyrs day which is supposed to be held in May and June 2020. The conference will later come up with another arrangement.”
“The celebrations at Namugongo require frequent meetings involving several people including government security agencies. Further, it demands unfettered movements of persons participating in the organization of the event. Above all, with the virus still alive in many countries including Uganda, it is not certain whether the restrictions on gatherings and movements will be lifted,” reads the letter in part.
Uganda currently has 81 cases of coronavirus and 52 recoveries.
