Residents in Kasese had their night cut short after major rivers in the district burst their banks spilling into the communities. The floods cut off Kasese-Fort Portal main road at Nyamwamba Bridge at around 2 am.
Kasese Municipality Mayor Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga says River Nyamwamba overflew at Bunyandiko in Kilembe sub country flooding in the low land areas.
Most affected areas are; Kibenge, Kisagazi and Nyakasanga, Kabingo and Kabughabugha. Kasese has been cut off from various neighbouring centres. The movement has become impossible. Homes, plantations and schools have been destroyed.
In Ibanda-Kyanya town council, River Mubuku has spilled into people’s houses.
According to Mr William Kambere, a resident of Ibanda II cell, several people have now fled their homes and are now encamped at Ibanda Primary School.
The bridge that connects Ibanda to Kachindo and subsequently to Maliba market has also been swept away.
A team from the government led by the State Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness Musa Ecweru and other humanitarian agencies are currently assessing the extent of damage in the area.
