MPs Asked to Provide Accountability for 20M Covid Money

Members of Parliament have been asked to provide accountability of the Shs 20million that was advanced to each MP to fight Covd19.

According to a letter written by the clerk to parliament Jane Kibirige, MPS who had already used the money before 5th May have been asked to provide accountability and those that hadn’t, have been asked to return it to the parliamentary commission before May 27, 2020.

MPs who had not used the money before 5th May have been asked to give the money to the district task force, while MPs representing special interest groups have been asked to either hand over the money to the national task force or return it to the parliamentary commission.

The money has raised a lot of controversy, and speculation that the Executive and Judiciary is at war. President Museveni criticized the MPs for allocating money to themselves when the country is in a crisis. Museveni said the MPs had thrown themselves in a trap that they could only get themselves out by returning the money. He described the allocation as a morally reprehensible act. This infuriated many MPs.

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, said her institution was under attack. She asked MPs to follow her directives on the usage of the money.
