On Monday, the police planted blocks along different roads in the heart of the city with the intent to enforce the ban of boda bodas from operating there.
The enforcement was, however, suspended few hours into the day. Some motorbikes had been impounded though.
The police announced was suspended after a call from the Ministry of Works and Transport. The police spokesperson said the implementation had been suspended to allow the creation of outer stages of the gazette zones and signage.
Enanga said the implantation had started without proper guidance from the relevant authorities and that a clear outline is going to be released.
“We call upon those in the boda boda industry to continue with their operations pending new developments. They should observe the SoPs (standard operating procedures) and should also work within the timing of the curfew and avoid carrying more than one passenger,” Enanga added.
Enanga revealed that 927 bikes had been impounded for violating the free zones. He promised that the bikes would be returned to their owners as new guidelines are developed.
According to Daniel Nuweabine, the acting KCCA manager of communications and corporate affairs, the enforcement of the free zones will start on August 31.
