Kamuli Member of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has announced that she will be contesting for the seat of speaker of parliament as an independent candidate.
Kadaga made the announcement on Sunday evening at Hotel Africana in Kampala following a decision by National Resistance Movement – NRM Central Executive Committee to back Omoro County MP Jacob Oulanyah.
“My party has decided to sideline me. I am here to announce that I will be running for speakership as an independent,” she said.
Kadaga said that she was denied opportunity to present her ideas to the electorate and that an unfair action was taken which she didn’t agree with.
“I am being pushed out because of speaking on issues that affect people. You remember the CEC elections which were marred with irregularities and intimidation but I won because the people of the NRM and the people of Uganda trust me.”
“By taking this decision, the position of women has been relegated so I want to stand up for the rights of those who are marginalized.
“I am requesting the people of Uganda to ask your representatives to vote for me.”
The elections for speaker of parliament will be held on Monday May 24th at the Kololo Independence grounds, an activity that will be led by the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo.
The event will also be marked as the first sitting of the 11th parliament.
