Market vendors in Katakwi Town Council, Katakwi District have expressed dissatisfaction to the authorities over the poor state of hygiene in the town, especially at the Katakwi daily market.
According to angry vendors, the Katakwi Town Council authorities do not take the state of the market as a priority.
The vendors claim that as a business center, the authorities have neglected monitoring the market premises which has left garbage scattered in several parts of the market.
Headed by Joseph Opus, the health committee chairperson at the market told our reporter that the Town Council, for the past twenty years, has never handed over the public toilet to the market management committee thus leaving the business community in the market to dump human waste at the premises.
He added that, despite their efforts to put in place different committees to manage the status of the market from security, health, revenue collection among others, the authorities haven’t come to their rescue.
However, the Assistant Town Clerk Katakwi Town Council, Fidel Oluka has asked the market management committee to be patient, saying the authorities are doing everything possible to meet their demands.
Mr. Oluka added that the Town Council has been going through many challenges where they failed to collect over 40 million as local revenue in the previous financial year 2020/2021 which he says left the authorities stumbling with the little that they received from the Central Government.
