General Court Martial sitting in Makindye has finallyreleased Rubaga North Councilor-elect James Mubiru on bail, The Tower Post reports.

Mubiru who has been under incarceration since March 2021 was released on Tuesday on a non-cash bail of Shs 10million.

In his ruling, General Court Martial chairman Lt Gen Andrew Gutti said Mubiru was given his temporary freedom, following months of detention.

“Considering the prosecution and defence submissions, this court hereby releases you, James Mubiru on bail, you are ordered to execute Shs 10m, not cash,” Gutti said.

The opposition National Unity Platform – NUP leaning councilor was arrested in March 2012 on charges of possession of military stores.

Mubiru is accused of wearing a red beret which according to prosecution is a monopoly of the armed forces. Prosecution argues that this contravenes section 164(i) of the UPDF Act 2005.

His arrest sparked controversy with many NUP sympathizers alleging that he had been killed but he would later be arraigned in court.

Mubiru remains a councillor- elect for Rubaga North, having missed the swearing- in ceremony on May 26, 2021.
