Former Security Minister Gen Elly Tumwine has died, The Tower Post reports.
Tumwine who is one of the heroes of the 1986 bush war that brought the National Resistance Movement government to power died at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was airlifted recently as he battled cancer -related complications.
Details about his death and ailments remain scanty as the family hasn’t spoken out.
Tumwine retired from active military service in July 2022 at the rank of General.
He served as commander of the National Resistance Army – NRA from 1984 to 1987, a period during which the NRA rebels took power in a military coup.
He served as Minister of State for Defence in 1989 and was appointed Director General of the External Security Organization (ESO) from 1994 until 1996.
In 1996, he was appointed a Presidential Adviser, a position he served in from 1996 until 1998.
Tumwine has also continuously represented the UPDF in Parliament since 1986.
