Formerly known as the Arizona Open, the WM Phoenix Open was first played in 1932 and is known by the nickname ‘The Greatest Show on Grass’. The most successful players in the tournament’s history are Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia and Phil Mickelson, all of whom have won three titles, while the reigning champion is Scottie Scheffler.
The 2023 edition will once again feature a star-studded field, with Scheffler joined by Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Sam Burns, Max Homa, Cameron Young, Billy Horschel, Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama.
“As we get closer to ‘The People’s Open’, the field is shaping up to be one of the best ever,” said 2023 Tournament Chairman Pat Williams. “We’re extremely excited to add four more Top-20 players in the world, and thrilled to welcome back Hideki, a two-time WM Phoenix Open champion. We are looking forward to that first day of play at TPC Scottsdale.”
In addition, PGA Tour rookie Taylor Montgomery has received a sponsor exemption for the 2023 WM Phoenix Open: “Taylor is putting together an incredible rookie season and has clearly established himself as one of the PGA Tour’s rising stars,” said Williams. “We’re thrilled to offer him a sponsor exemption and can’t wait to see what he can do at his first WM Phoenix Open.”
The TPC Scottsdale features a 7261-yard par 71 course and the purse for the WM Phoenix Open is a massive $20million.
