South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir will officially open the Juba National Stadium on June 11, the committee in charge of the ceremony has announced.
The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the head of the Supreme Committee for the opening of the Juba National Stadium, Deborah Akec, disclosed that FIFA President Gianni Infantino would also attend the Tuesday ceremony.
Akec added that the participation of the two leaders in the inauguration signified the great importance of South Sudan to the global football community.
She also announced that the South Sudanese national football team, the Bright Stars, would on Tuesday take on neighbors Sudan in the fourth round of the Africa qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.
“This confirms the growth of South Sudan on the world football stage,” Akec said.
She explained that the new stadium represents a monumental leap in sports in South Sudan for the sake of sports excellence and unity for the unbreakable people.
The President of the South Sudan Football Association Augustine Madut said that it was a great honor for them to announce the opening of the Juba National Stadium.
This is the first time in our history that we have this kind of stadium, and it is a great honor for ourselves and our children to be able to host international sports, said Madut.
He disclosed that some of the continental CAF and the regional CECAFA football officials would also witness the opening ceremony.
