Sad news coming in indicates that former Deputy Chief Justice Lady Justice Leticia Eulalia Mary Mukasa-Kikonyogo has died.
Born in 1940, Kikonyogo became the first Ugandan woman magistrate Grade I (1971-1973), the first woman Chief Magistrate (1973-1986), the first woman to be appointed High Court judge (1986) and sat on the Court of Appeal to hear criminal appeals.
She was also appointed the first woman justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda in 1997 and became the first woman to be appointed Deputy Chief Justice in the year 2000
Kikonyogo who has died at the age of 77, took on farming at her home in KBB Zone, Kitende along the Kampala Entebbe Road since she retired in 2010 after clocking 70 years.
She will among other things be remembered for her fight for women and children’s rights.
