Ugandan investigative journalist and news anchor Solomon Serwanjja has won the BBC World News Komla Dumor Award 2019.
Serwanjja is a news reporter and anchor and Uganda’s NBS Television.
He has also produced a number of investigative reports including the recent BBC Africa Eye programme report about the theft and sale of government drugs in Uganda.
Serwanjja becomes the second Ugandan journalist to win the award after Nancy Kancungira, who won the award in 2015.
Others that have won the Komla Dumor award include Nigeria’s Didi Akinyelure and Amina Yuguda in 2016 and 2017 respectively, and Kenya’s Waihiga Mwaura in 2018.
Journalists from across the continent were invited to apply for the award, which aims to uncover and promote fresh talent from Africa
The award was set up in honour of BBC presenter Komla Dumor who passed away in January 2014, and aims to continue Komla’s legacy by celebrating African journalism and finding exceptional talent.
As part of the award prize, Serwanjja will spend three months at the BBC headquarters in London, gaining skills and experience in journalism
