President Museveni is in constant discussions with East African heads of states in a bid to fight the spread of the novel coronavirus in East Africa.
On Wednesday, the President relayed that he had held a discussion with his counterparts Uhuru Kenya (Kenyan President) and Paul Kagame (Rwanda)
“I had a very long discussion with H.E Uhuru Kenyatta and H.E Paul Kagame regarding truck drivers. I also talked to H.E John Pombe Magufuli on a slightly different subject. However, President Uhuru and Kagame agreed that we can have a common plan for truck drivers,” Museveni posted on his social media platforms.
Uganda has in a period of only one week registered about 15 imported coronavirus cases from Kenya and Tanzania.
There has, as such, been a call by Ugandans to block the cargo drivers from entering the country. But in his address, the President said it was suicidal to do so. Truck drivers, he insisted, transport essential goods. The government has, however, put in place stringent measures to ensure that the drivers do not fuel the spread of the virus. Among the measures; truck drivers are not allowed to sleep in hotels or lodges along the roads.
Mandatory tests have also been encouraged.
