Mathias Mpuuga Voted Leader of Opposition in Parliament

National Unity Platform – NUP Deputy President Mathias Mpuuga has been voted as the Leader of Opposition in the 11th Parliament, The Tower Post reports.

Mpuuga who is also the Masaka Municipality Member of Parliament won a vote cast by NUP legislators on Friday morning at the Party headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala.

A former Democratic Party – DP member, Mpuuga joined NUP in 2020 in a wave that brought 10 members from DP to the NUP.

He was instrumental in January 2021 mobilisation that saw the NUP sweep many MP seats in Central region.

Mpuuga is also famous for the 2011 Walk to Work protests which he led alongside then FDC Presidential candidate Dr. Col. Kizza Besigye.

In the same selection, Manjiyaa County Legislator John Baptist Nambeshe has been selected as the opposition Chief whip, a position that was previously held by FDC’s Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda.

Busiro East MP Medard Segona will head the Public Accounts Committee – PAC and will be deputized by Jeema President and Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament Asuman Basalirwa.

PAC is man­dated to ex­am­ine the au­dited ac­counts show­ing the ap­pro­pri­a­tion of the sums granted by Par­lia­ment to meet the pub­lic ex­pen­di­ture of gov­ern­ment.

The Com­mit­tee is by law designated to be chaired and dep­u­tized by Mem­bers des­ig­nated by the Of­fi­cial Op­po­si­tion Party or Or­ga­ni­za­tion.

In other appointments, NUP Spokesperson and Nakawa West legislator Joel Ssenyonyi will lead the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Entreprises – COSASE.

Mityana Municipality MP Frencis Zaake Butebo is the new Parliamentary Commissioner.
