Rukiga District NUP Coordinator Arrested

Emmanuel Mutambuuka Turyasingura, the coordinator for the National Unity Platform (NUP) party in charge of Rukiga district has been re-arrested.

Turyasingura was arrested on Thursday by police at his home in Muhanga town council. Derrick Katebire Mugyesera, the NUP party secretary-general for Kigezi region says that Turyasingura is being detained at Muhanga police station in Muhanga town council.

In March, police stormed Turysingura’s home and arrested him. The police also confiscated NUP’s presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine’s campaign posters and the party’s identity cards among other documents.

Police later preferred charges of having military stores before he was released on bond.

Kateebire says that one of the police officers told him that the charges against Turyasingura are in connection to him having the banned red beret.

The District Police Commander, Albert Ismaat Patrick declined to comment on the matter when contacted. But a police officer who preferred anonymity attached to Muhanga police station where the suspect is being detained says that his arrest was after the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) sanctioned his file.

Kateebire wonders why the suspect cannot be taken to court immediately since the file has been sanctioned by DPP.

Many NUP supporters across the country are facing charges of possession of military stores.

Two days ago, the General Court Martial released 17 of the 35 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who have been on remand since December last year when they were arrested from Kalangala island during the presidential campaigns. 18 others were further remanded until June 8 this year.
