A joint security team including detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and military operatives have conducted a search at the Nakasero residence of outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, as speculation mounts over a high-level corruption investigation targeting senior government officials.
According to multiple sources, the operation involved personnel from different security agencies.
This development comes days after a reported closed-door meeting at State House Nakasero where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is said to have questioned the Speaker over the source of her wealth and recent lavish spending.
Rolls-Royce Purchase Sparks Public Outrage
The controversy escalated following reports that Among had acquired a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan, valued at approximately Shs 3.4 billion.
The purchase triggered widespread debate on social media, with many Ugandans questioning how the Speaker funded the vehicle.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba weighed in on the matter, posting on X that despite being the President’s son for 52 years, he had never owned or ridden in a Rolls-Royce — and believed President Museveni had not either.
His comments were widely interpreted as criticism of extravagant lifestyles among top officials.
Political Fallout Intensifies
In a dramatic shift, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), closely associated with Gen. Muhoozi, withdrew its earlier endorsement of Among and her deputy for the next parliamentary term.
On Thursday night, Gen. Muhoozi publicly endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth as the next Speaker of Parliament, describing him as “the best Minister in our government for the past five years.”
Wider Investigations
On Friday, newly elected Masaka Woman MP Justine Nameere was arrested in what sources describe as part of broader ongoing investigations.
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that several officials perceived to be close allies of Speaker Among were summoned to State House for questioning overnight.
Additional claims indicate that security detail around Among has been adjusted, with heightened deployments reported at her residences in Kololo and Kigo.
As of Saturday morning, the government had not issued an official statement confirming the raid, any house arrest claims, or details of the alleged investigations.
Separately, the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala, confirmed that her office had received and is processing a petition from activists and lawyers seeking a probe into Speaker Among over alleged breaches of the Leadership Code Act, particularly concerning wealth declaration.
