One person has been confirmed dead and five injured following the strike in Mityana Municipality on Sunday morning, where police swung Police swung into action, firing tear gas and bullets to disperse by angry protesters.
The protests broke up following continued reports that their area Member of Parliamant Francis Zaake Butebi’s life was in a critical condition at Rubaga Hospital.
Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima confirmed the death and injuries in a statement, adding that they are yet to apprehend the officer that shot at the protesters.
“Our officers at Mityana hospital have confirmed that the six patients admitted there as a result of the morning violent riots, one Mr. Samuel Ssekiziyivu a resident of Myanzi, Kasanda District has breathed his last. It is regrettable and sad,” the statement reads.
Kayima said that the other five who were injured are one Mr. Ssengooba Derrick, who has been discharged and the four; Muwonge Reagan, David Asiimwe, Jingo Lawrence and Ms. Jalia Nakiryowa are still undergoing medical attention.
“The process to apprehend the officer who shot is on. Again, members of the public are asked to desist from violent confrontation that often result in regrettable incidents. Our sympathies go the family of the deceased and we wish the victims quick recovery,” Kayima said.
Reports from Rubaga Hospital indicate that MP Zaake is off life support despite being feared dead, a report that sparked off the riots in Mityana.
