Makindye Court Martial has denied Gen. Kale Kayihura’s request to be allowed chance to travel outside the country to consult with his doctors.

Kayihura who was released on bail earlier today had been in jail since his arrest on June 13th.

He is being charged with failure to protect military gear and aiding abduction and repatriation of Rwandan nationals in Uganda.

In his bail application, Kayihura’s lawyers stated that the General is a family man in his advanced age (62 years), has knowledge of the law, has never been indicted and is also a high ranking officer.

They also presented Kayihura’s medical records before praying that court allows him to keep his passport and travel abroad to consult with his doctors.

“The applicant needs urgent medical attention that might require him to travel abroad. We pray that he be allowed not to deposit his passport,” prosecution submitted.

But GCM chairman Gen. Andrew Gutti in his ruling said Kayihura’s offences are grave and attract a maximum of a death sentence.

He however noted that court not disregard the fact that he is a first time offender hence releasing him although with restrictions.

As per Gutti’s ruling, Kayihura is only allowed to stay and move in the districts of Kampala and Wakiso.

He is not allowed to travel abroad unless with permission from the same court.

He is also expected to report back to court every first Monday of the month, and any other occasions as directed by court.
