Makerere University Vice Chancellor (VC) Barnabas Nawangwe has suspended students’ Guild elections to an unnamed date, The Tower Post has learnt.
This, the VC communicated in a letter dated February 13th addressed to the Dean of students.
Nawangwe said his decision was guided by a request by the Guild Speaker to extend the elections until normalcy is restored at the University.
“I hereby suspend the Students’ Guild elections to provide a conducive environment to facilitate the process of returning the university to full normalcy,” the letter reads in part.
“An extension for the process will be permitted in accordance with article 73(1) of the Students Guild constitution should circumstances warrant so,” he added.
The situation in Makerere remains tense as lecturers under their body, the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) continue with their strike.
They demand that the VC should cancel the suspension of three of their colleagues including MUASA chairperson Deus Kamunyu.
