Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party leaders have said they are going to shun the national Independence celebrations again.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Ibrahim Ssemuju who is the party spokesperson said FDC is planning to hold parallel celebrations at their headquarters in Najjanakumbi.
“It is useless to celebrate Independence when 70 per cent of Ugandans are poor and cannot pay school fees for their children,” Ssemujju to the press.
“Adding that, “Independence is not only about passing time.”
According to Ssemujju, independence is about celebrating achievements the country has achieved.
He said that government wastes a lot of money organizing celebrations like independence.
“I advise the president to pick a leaf from our neighbors, Tanzanian where Independence celebrations were abolished.”
During the press briefing in Najjanankumbi, Ssemujju revealed that they will have a lecture delivered by their former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye about how the country got its Independence, among other things.
